Not much time so I
Not much time so I am copy and pasting my story! I didn't get to have my homebirth. My experience wasn't empowering, but it was beautiful, and most of all it was mine. I made all the decisions and called all the shots. No one hurt me or degraded me and it was a peaceful joyful birthing. Stats: Oliver William Hyde born May 27th, 2002 after 7.5 hrs of labor. 9lbs 7oz, 21.5 inches of beautiful baby boy. Well, after several weeks of severe anxiety, and days of being in labor, I decided to go to the hospital to get checked out. (Actually I was an emotional wreck!) My homebirth midwife found my a great CNM who talked with me about the possibiltiy of induction. I was so scared I was shaking all over and crying. I decided not to do it, but made an appointment to have my fluid levels checked via ultrasound the next day. On the way to the ultrasound, I decided that if my levels were good I was going to have my homebirth midwife break my water and just get it over with that afternoon. As it happens, the levels were really low. I started crying again and they hustled me up to labor and delivery. I talked with my CNM and my homebirth midwife who both encouraged induction. I was so scared but in the end, decided to do it. I was crying all the way up to the time they put in the I.V. At which point, all my anxiety vanished and I became calm and relaxed. Something was telling me that I was doing the right thing. The contractions started coming right away. About 8 minutes apart. I started my hypnobirthing and was calm and relaxed. About 3 hrs into my labor the contractions got really intense. I was having trouble relaxing and started wondering how I could go on. I begged the nurse to check me, hoping to be 4 cms so I could get an epidural. She checked me. 2cms no change. UGH I wanted to cry! I decided to try fentanol. That really helped. It was like an immediate hypnotic state. I went back to my hypnobirthing. About 30 minutes later I had an AMAZING contraction! My eyes got huge and I was saying " Baby! Don't do that!" as the baby's head had slammed into my cervix. The nurse decided at that point to check me again. 4 cms, epidural time. I had to wait quite a while for the anesthesiologist, but I was handling it ok. After she finally got there it took her a long time to get it in. The contractions were very strong and close together, it was hard to relax bent over like that. After that it was only working on my left side ugh. Finally it was working and the nurse checked me again. 7 cms! Woo Hoo! DH and I talked for a while. After an hour my midwife came in and checked me. 8.5 cms 80% effaced. I started pushing lightly at the peaks(kept my hand on my belly to tell)to help my cervix to dialate. Both previous births I had gotten stuck at 8 cms. I noticed the epidural was starting to wear off. It was ok at first but finally I asked them to top it off. At this time the midwife checked me and I was complete. She broke my water bag at that time. I started pushing the way I read in "Childbirth without fear". I would hold my breath and lean on the baby. No one noticed I was pushing. I figured it would take a while so I should get started. They got me on my left side and told Dave to hold up my leg. The midwife started to do perineal massage and said "Oh my! Daddy do you want to see your baby?" He was allready past my pubic bone! I grabbed my own leg and told Dave to get the video camera. The midwife giggled a little. One more push and he was crowning, then several gentle pushes and his head was out. They suctioned him due to meconium in the fluid (which was an amazing small amount of fluid by the way.) and another push and out he came. They put him on my belly but he just wouldn't breathe and his lungs sounded really wet. They decided to cut the cord at that time and suction him. After they were done they put him on my chest for a few minutes. I kissed him and told him he would be ok. Then they took him to the nursery with daddy close behind where he stayed for 2.5 hrs! UGH! I finally got my sweet baby and we have been inseparable ever since! I must say the nurses were amazing! They were so respectful of me and no one gave me a tough time about my planned homebirth. I feel so happy that things went so well for us :-) posted by Tamra at 04:37 PM
